Aftershock...

2002-02-13 - 1:55 p.m.

Geez, I can't believe it has been 2 weeks since my "near death" shock experience. I am still a little gunshy around the mike stands, plus last night at practice I saw a spark fly from our rhythm guitarist's string ends to the damn space heater in Mandy's apt. Luckily he was not hurt and probably would not even have noticed except for paranoid me pointing it out.

My right hand is healing up OK except for the first finger which still looks bad & hurts occasionally. I guess I won't be going on any random shooting sprees anytime soon ;-). I got my bass checked out, the wiring fixed (and an extra ground wire added), and new strings & intonation/action setup done. Not bad for $55 all told (strings and labor). Woo hoo, it sounds really schweet now. Hopefully that tune-up and maybe a few new cords will make sure nothing like this ever happens again!

BZZT! close call

News flash: I nearly got shocked to death at band practice 2002-01-30 I touched a mike stand and my bass at the same time, and BAM! I could not let go. It was really scary. I started seeing all blurry, hearing a loud 60Hz hum, feeling the shock, etc. I started screaming. Fortunately my legs still worked so I ran as far as I could to get away, eventually all the plugs got pulled out (by then everybody realized I was not joking, so they started yanking everything) and the current cut out. Needless to say everybody (including myself) is quite freaked out about it. The whole thing took 30 seconds max. but it seemed like forever. I really was scared I was gonna die. I ended up with several nasty burns on my right hand which are turning into big blisters now. Mostly it just freaked me out, I don't think it stopped my heart or fried my brain or anything, fortunately. However I am going to see the doctor today just to get checked out and make sure there is nothing to worry about.

We will probably be looking into a new place to practice, obviously Tim & Mandy's house does not have very safe wiring!

Got the gig with Mandy's band that I tried out for last Sunday. I am pretty damn psyched up about it. I am happy just to jam out with some cool people, even if it is on bass and not guitar.

OK, you asked for it - sit back and suck up another steaming slab of seamy stream of semi-consciousness straight from my sickly cerebrum.

Why? Why not? What is this life / the universe / everything all about? These are the kinds of questions I keep on asking, and to which I never get satisfactory answers. Anybody with a clue and who does not have designs on brainwashing me & stealing my money, feel free to enlighten me.

P.S. any answers involving "God" or "gods" or (especially) "Jesus" will be ignored.

P.P.S. I am jonesing to play loud rawk git-fiddle in front of other people. (I can also play rhythm, bass, acoustic, 12-string, etc. but the real thrill is in playing killer screeching leads). I don't care if it is a jam session, a paying gig, or just a couple of adoring teenyboppers cheering me on ;-) I also don't care what the rest of the band sounds like - you won't be able to hear them over me anyway 8-P - but seriously, any playas out there wanting to get together sometime, lemme know. I'll play just about any style, but no new country, lame rap or muzak, please.

Here are a few prospective band names I was tossing around, feel free to comment on them - however if I find out anybody else has stolen them & plays lame music under them I will hunt them down & do nasty things to them...

Band &/or song names:

Spam Pinata (NRBQ in-joke; cool logo possibilities)

B.F.D. (bellaire fire dept. ? blindfold feedback doubtfire ;-)

lloigor (Lovecraft; but how pron.? yoy-gore?)

Lively Ingrates (punked-out Grateful Dead covers?)

Flapdoodle (why not?)

Spooge (ack - too "un-PC"?) (maybe Splooge or Splurge)

the Kubic Rubes (how 80's!)

Fluffhead/Phluph (too Phishy?)

Killer Furbies (ugh)

Sheeple. Sounds about right.
Why does everyone seem to buy into the BS propaganda being constantly fed to them?

Time to start actually writing something.

Big Story Ideas (not all can fit together, just extrapolations / interesting premises):

Totally free OS plus DB plus GUI plus AI plus ???? kills off entire "closed" software industry by 2020.
Linux (or its successor) kills off MS, Sun, Oracle, IBM, HP (except for hardware & support).
Self-aware, self-installing AI worm takes over the net. All-encompassing "matrix" style grid computing.
Genetic engineering and information sciences are ever more intertwined. Send in the clones.
Then biotech + nanotech kills off hardware, semiconductors, manufacturing, virtually all industry.

Post apocalyptic, post - M$ world. US stock & bond market crash to near zero, taking most of
world economy down with it. China takes over most of Asia unopposed by bankrupt US & Russia.
Oil starts to run out, but alt-energy takes up enough slack to keep things going slowly.
Islamic terrorism becomes so widespread that rest of world goes on "anti-Jihad" and nukes Mecca.

All patent & copyright protection laws fall into disuse or are circumvented - what people pay for
now is the novelty factor - who came up with the newest thing first (before anybody else could come
out with a copy) is who gets the $/egoboo/power. Everything is Napsterized but who controls the
bandwidth? Decentralized p2p unregulated wireless pervasive networking at gigabit speeds....
RumorNet? Grapevine? Sturgeon's Law (90% of everything is crap) runs rampant. The critics
/ trendites / fashionistas (people who say what the 10% 'non-crap' is) rule everything.

Fun stuff:

Assassination politics takes world by storm. Most of the "famous" people of 20th and early 21st
century are either killed or deep in hiding. Governments collapse as nobody wants to run for office.
Anarchy and vigilante mobs are widespread. Economy collapses back to basic barter & precious metals.
Fortunately nobody can afford the upkeep on all the nukes etc. so they sit there and rot.

P.S.
This is all crap.
